BMW & The Environment

Less Emissions. More driving pleasure - BMW EfficientDynamics

The future belongs to BMW EfficientDynamics. And so, in fact, does the present - as of Autumn 2007 no less than 22 models in the BMW range come with BMW EfficientDynamics technologies. As a result, all 22 achieve CO2 emissions of 140 g/km or less - in some cases, considerably less for example, the 118d 5-door achieves a staggering C02 emissions figure of 119g/km which is clean enough to be exempt from the London Congestion Charge. And that is just the beginning.

Efficient Technologieswe concentrate on what really matters: Everything

The Engine

1 How many miles are there in every gallon? That's 48.7 if you are driving a 116i (on the combined cycle). Or a range of 569 miles on a full tank. Thanks to continual engine optimisation as part of the BMW EfficientDynamics concept, BMW drivers are now leading the way when it comes to economy. In the blink of an eye, High-precision Direct Injection ensures that no less than 200 injections are supplied - just one of the numerous BMW EfficientDynamics innovations that helps significantly reduce fuel consumption and emission levels.

If the engine's not running, it's not using any fuel.

Auto Start-Stop stops the engine automatically whenever the car comes to rest and is taken out of gear - for example, at traffic lights - and restarts the second the clutch pedal is depressed, saving fuel and reducing emissions

1

Power from your brake pedal.

Intelligent Alternator Control and Brake Energy Regeneration monitors the battery condition, engaging the alternator as and when the battery requires recharging. This reduces the demands on the engine, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. In addition, when the car's brakes are applied or when coasting downhill, this system automatically engages the alternator to charge the battery, recycling energy that would otherwise be wasted.

1

A turn for the better.

Electric Power Steering uses an electric motor to assist the steering, this system is not only lighter in weight than a conventional hydraulic power steering, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions - but assistance can also be varied to aid the driver at lower speeds.

1

Open to increased efficiency.

Active Aerodynamics controls the air flaps that regulate air flow to the engine and braking systems. By opening and closing these flaps, the engine is able to reach its operating temperature quicker, whilst vehicle drag is also reduced -helping the car move through the air more easily and reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

1

It pays to listen to recommendations.

Optimum Shift Indicator uses a small visual display on the car's dashboard to show the optimum gear for any driving situation. This gives drivers the opportunity to adopt a more fuel-efficient driving style.

1

Attention to detail.

Reduced Rolling Resistance Tyres use special heat resistant, anti-distortion materials in the tread and sidewalls of the tyre, to reduce tyre flexing in all driving situations, thereby helping to lower emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
